What Easter Really Means – The Day Between
Today is Saturday—the quiet space between the cross and the resurrection. The day when the disciples grieved—confused and afraid. The day when it seemed like all was lost. The day when the world was waiting for hope, but hadn’t seen it yet.
This week, I had the joy of teaching our teenage boys at Beacon of Hope Africa about Holy Week. Some of them had never heard the full story before—from Palm Sunday to Resurrection Sunday—and their hearts were wide open. We walked through every moment of the final week of Jesus’ life, and today, I want to invite you into that same journey of reflection and hope.
On Palm Sunday, Jesus rode into Jerusalem on a donkey. The people laid palm branches at His feet and shouted:
“Hosanna to the Son of David! Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord! Hosanna in the highest heaven!” (Matthew 21:9)
They expected a king to save them from the Romans. But Jesus didn’t come to save a nation—He came to save hearts.
At the Last Supper, He knelt down and washed His disciples’ feet. He said: “I have set you an example that you should do as I have done for you.” (John 13:15)
He was showing them—and us—that leadership in God’s Kingdom begins with humility and service. Then came the Garden of Gethsemane. Jesus prayed:
“Father, if you are willing, take this cup from me; yet not my will, but yours be done.”
(Luke 22:42)
He chose obedience in the face of suffering. And He chose it for us.
On the cross, Jesus said: “Father, forgive them, for they do not know what they are doing.”
(Luke 23:34)
Forgiveness wasn’t an afterthought—it was His heart, even in the middle of pain.
And then came Saturday. The in-between. The silence. The disciples didn’t know Sunday was coming. But we do. Because on the third day, the curtain tore.
“At that moment the curtain of the temple was torn in two from top to bottom. The earth shook, the rocks split.” (Matthew 27:51)
And that was only the beginning. Jesus didn’t just die for forgiveness—He died to give us access. The curtain was what separated the people from God’s presence. When Jesus died, that barrier was gone. And when He rose, everything changed.
“Praise be to the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ! In His great mercy He has given us new birth into a living hope through the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead.”
(1 Peter 1:3)
And He promised we wouldn’t walk alone:
“I will ask the Father, and He will give you another Advocate to help you and be with you forever—the Spirit of truth... you know Him, for He lives with you and will be in you.” (John 14:16–17)
If you’re in a season of silence or grief—just like that first Saturday—I want you to know: Sunday is coming. Hope is alive. Jesus rose. And the grave never wins.
