Protected When I Didn’t See It Coming

April 07, 20253 min read

I had one of those moments recently where life threw me a curveball—and it could’ve ended very differently.

I was home alone, feeling good, and ready for the day. My husband was away on business, and my son was with his aunt. I had rested over the weekend and felt ready to jump into the week.

I decided it was finally time to make the sourdough bread I’d been putting off. The starter was already out and ready to be used. I set everything up to bake, but then… I realized I was out of flour.

I stepped down into the pantry, and suddenly—I was on the floor. My left leg went straight out, and my right leg bent behind me in a painful way.

The pain was intense. I couldn’t believe what had just happened. I screamed, passed out, and when I woke up, I was soaking wet, sitting in a puddle of water. I thought I was sitting in bleach, so I quickly tried to get up. I managed to pull myself up to the step, and with my couch as support, I stood up.

It was only after I stood up that I saw the extension cord lying in the water.

It could’ve been so much worse, but God protected me.

Not Everything Is an Attack—Sometimes It’s Just Life

I know many people would say that what happened to me was an attack from the enemy. Honestly, I used to think that way too. But lately, I’ve been thinking and learning that not everything that goes wrong is a direct attack from the enemy. Sometimes life just happens.

We live in a broken world. Things break. Accidents happen.

“Time and chance happen to them all.” – Ecclesiastes 9:11

Sometimes it’s just life. But even in the hardest moments, God is still with us, protecting us in ways we can’t see.

God’s Protection and the Power of Prayer

When I woke up, I realized I could have been seriously injured or even electrocuted from the cord in that water. But I wasn’t. God protected me.

Later that day, I shared the story with my mom. She said, “Angie, I pray for you every single day.” And I could feel the power of those prayers—not just hers, but all of those who pray for me and my family.

“The prayer of a righteous person is powerful and effective.” – James 5:16

Those prayers, I believe, covered me even before I knew I needed it. It’s amazing how our prayers work even when we can’t see it.

Be Encouraged—Your Prayers Matter

If you’re praying for someone and wondering if it’s making a difference—it is.

If you feel like you’ve been praying and nothing is changing, don’t stop. Prayer is powerful, and sometimes we don’t see the full impact until much later.

I encourage you today to keep praying. Even when life doesn’t make sense. Even when it’s hard to see how your prayers are changing anything.

Even when all you can say is “Jesus.”
